Jakhu Temple, Shimla
Jakhu Temple is one of the most famous and sacred places in Shimla. It is located on Jakhu Hill, the highest point of Shimla, at an altitude of about 2,455 meters above sea level. The temple is dedicated to Lord Hanuman and is visited by thousands of devotees and tourists every year.
According to legend, during the war in the epic Ramayana, Lakshman (the brother of Lord Rama) was injured. To save his life, Lord Hanuman went in search of the Sanjeevani herb. On his way, he stopped at Jakhu Hill to rest. It is believed that Hanuman’s footprints can still be seen here, making the temple a sacred place of worship.
One of the highlights of Jakhu Temple is the 108-feet tall idol of Lord Hanuman, which can be seen from many parts of Shimla. This massive statue is among the tallest in the world and attracts a large number of visitors.
Reaching Jakhu Temple is an experience in itself. People can either walk uphill through the forested paths, enjoy a horse ride, or take the Jakhu Ropeway cable car for a scenic view of the mountains. The surroundings are full of tall deodar trees and fresh mountain air, making the journey peaceful and refreshing.
